SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS

Slips, trips and falls have been a sure way to get a laugh in many cultures over the years. Human beings have been falling over their own feet ever since they first began to walk. In fact, the subject of falls is extremely serious. Did you know that falls are one of the top leading causes of accidental deaths? In case you are thinking that falls are only a danger to people who work on scaffolds and steel girders up in the sky, think again. Most falls actually occur on the same level and are caused by just tripping over an obstacle or slipping on something.

Here are some ways to prevent falls:
  • Keep walkways and floors free of obstacles such as boxes, cords, and litter. Even objects such as pencils on the floor have caused serious falls.
  • Flooring surfaces must be even and secured. Watch out for obstacles such as loose tiles or carpeting.
  • Don't run or walk too fast.
  • Adjust your walking speed and style to the surface you are traveling on. If the surface is rough, cluttered, slippery or at an angle such as a ramp, you need to slow down and take small careful steps.
  • Wear safe footwear, with low heels and a good fit. Keep your shoelaces tied. Avoid slippery soles and be sure to wear shoes with adequate tread when walking on icy, greasy or wet surfaces. A defect such as a nail coming through the heel can cause a person to slip.
Take your near-misses seriously. Let's say you have just skidded across a slick patch of flooring or tripped over an extension cord. You are not injured, but just a little shaken and embarrassed. Take the time to see why the incident occurred in the first place and identify what can be done to prevent it from happening again. Does the floor need non-skid matting? Should the cord be moved or taped down?

It is important to stay alert to slipping and tripping hazards in your work area and the routes which you travel in the course of your shift. Watch out for hazards which might put you in danger of a fall.

WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT

1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water

2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minute

3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.

4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours

5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.

6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/ reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days

2. Gastric - 10 days

3. Diabetes - 30 days

4. Constipation - 10 days

5. Cancer - 180 days

6. TB - 90 days

7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.

It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.

Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.

Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets read through inform it to everyone they know, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

Chocolate kills dogs! True, chocolate affects a dog's heart and nervous system; a few ounces are enough to kill a small dog.

Succeeding in the Workplace

The symptoms of AD/HD create special challenges for the adult in the workplace, just as they do for the child in school. To date, very little research has been conducted that provides adults with AD/HD empirically- based approaches to understanding and coping with workplace issues. Until scientifically- based guidelines are available, it may prove useful to follow the procedures commonly used by career counselors to guide individuals in selecting a job and coping with AD/HD on the job. This information and resource sheet will:

offer tips for improving on-the-job functioning

describe the rights of individuals under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

provide guidelines for making career choices

The assistance of a career counselor or a psychologist, social worker, or other health care worker with career counseling training is extremely helpful in understanding and maximizing these factors. Some individuals, however, may be able to carry out the steps discussed in this information and resource sheet with the help of questionnaires, checklists, and suggestions given in the career counseling books on the reference list.

Improving On-the-Job Functioning

Some adults with AD/HD have very successful careers. Others may struggle with a variety of challenges, including poor communication skills, distractibility, procrastination, and difficulty managing complex projects. Each individual with AD/HD has a different set of challenges. Therefore, it is important to consider your unique picture, as you go about designing strategies, accommodations and modifications for the workplace. Below are suggestions for coping with many of the symptoms or impairments associated with AD/HD.

1. Distractibility. Problems with external distractibility (noises and movement in the surrounding environment) and internal distractibility (daydreams) can be the biggest challenge for adults with AD/HD. The following strategies may help:

Request a private office or quiet cubicle, or take work home or work when others are not in the office.

Use "white noise" earphones, classical music or other sounds to drown out office noises.

Work in unused space, such as a conference room, where distractions are few.
Route phone calls directly to voicemail, and respond to them at a set time every day.

Jot down ideas in a notebook to avoid interruption of the current task.
Keep a list of ideas that come to you during meetings so that you can communicate more effectively.

Perform one task at a time. Do not start a new task until the current one is done.

2. Impulsivity. Adults with AD/HD may struggle with impulsivity and temper outbursts in the workplace. Try the following strategies:

Learn to use self-talk to monitor impulsive actions.

Work with a coach to role-play appropriate responses to frustrating situations.

Ask for regular, constructive feedback as a way of becoming more aware of how impulsivity might manifest in you.

Practice relaxation and meditation techniques.

Anticipate the problems that regularly trigger impulsive reactions and develop routines for coping with these situations.

3. Hyperactivity. Adults with the hyperactive type of AD/HD often do better in jobs that allow a great deal of movement, such as sales, but if you have a sedentary job, the following strategies may help:

Take intermittent breaks to do photocopying, go to the mailroom, or walk to the water fountain.

Take notes in meetings to prevent restlessness.

Move around, exercise, take a walk, or run up and down the stairs.

Bring lunch -- instead of going out to buy it -- so the lunch hour can be a time for exercise.

4. Poor Memory. Failing to remember deadlines and other responsibilities can antagonize coworkers, especially when working on a team. To improve memory, try the suggestions below:

Use tape recording devices or take copious notes at meetings.

Write checklists for complicated tasks.

Use a bulletin board or computer reminder list for announcements and other memory triggers.

Learn how to use a day planner and keep it with you to keep track of tasks and events.

Write notes on sticky pads and put them in a highly visible place.

5. Boredom-blockouts. Because of their strong need for stimulation, some adults with AD/HD become easily bored at work, especially with detailed paperwork and routine tasks. To prevent boredom, try the following tips:

Set a timer to stay on task.

Break up long tasks into shorter ones.

Take breaks, drink water, get up and walk around.

Find a job with stimulating responsibilities and minimal routine tasks.

6. Time management difficulties. Managing time can be a big challenge for adults with AD/HD. Here are some guidelines for improving time management skills:

Use time-line charts to break large projects into smaller pieces, with sub due-dates.

Reward yourself for achieving sub due-dates.

Use watch devices with alarms, buzzers, planners or computer planning software.

Program your computer to beep 5 minutes before every meeting on the calendar.
Avoid over-scheduling the day by overestimating how long each task or meeting will take.

See the information and resource sheet entitled, "Time Management: Learning to Use a Day Planner."

7. Procrastination. Putting things off not only prevents completion of tasks, but also creates problems for others on the team. Here are some strategies for success:

Break the task into small pieces, rewarding yourself along the way. (Rewards need not be grand; they might be a new CD, a long walk with your dog, dancing, or whatever you enjoy.)

It may be helpful to have a coach or someone else to whom you can report and be accountable for achieving each piece of the task, until you learn to overcome your tendencies to procrastinate. See the information and resource sheet on coaching for more information on how a coach can help (coming soon).

Ask the supervisor to set a deadline for tasks.

8. Difficulty managing long-term projects. Managing complex or long-term projects may be the hardest organizational challenge for adults with AD/HD. Managing projects requires a range of skills, including time management, organizing materials, tracking progress, and communicating accomplishments. Try the following guidelines:

Break projects up into manageable parts, with rewards for completing each.

Strive to shorten the time allowed on a project to better utilize "sprinting abilities."

Ask a coach to assist you in tolerating longer and longer projects, a bit at a time.

Find and partner with a co-worker who has good organizational skills.

Look for work that requires only short-term tasks.

9. Paperwork/details. The inability to find important papers, turn in reports and timesheets, and maintain a filing system can create the impression of carelessness. If paperwork is a significant part of the job, try these tips:

Make it a rule to handle each piece of paper only once.

Ask an administrative assistant to handle detailed paperwork.

Keep only those papers that are currently in use; purge the rest.

Make filing more fun by color coding folders and using catchy labels.

l0. Interpersonal/ social skill issues. Individuals with AD/HD may unintentionally offend co-workers by interrupting frequently, talking too much, being too blunt, or not listening well. If social skills are a challenge, try the following strategies:

Ask others for feedback, especially if there is a history of problems with colleagues and supervisors.

Learn to pick up on social cues more readily. Some adults with AD/HD have a hard time picking up nonverbal cues that they are angering a co-worker or supervisor.

Work with a coach to determine what types of settings often lead to interpersonal/ social issues.

Seek a position with greater autonomy if working with others is challenging.

(1) private employers with 15 or more employees,
(2) all activities of state and local governments, including employment, and (3) "places of public accommodation, " including most private schools and higher education institutions.

It is important to understand that being diagnosed with AD/HD does not automatically make an individual eligible for protection or accommodations under the RA or ADA. The protections of these laws extend to individuals who meet four conditions:

They are individuals with disabilities under the law;

They are otherwise qualified for the position, with or without reasonable accommodations;

They are being excluded from employment solely by reasons of their disability; and they are covered by the applicable federal law.

To be eligible for the protection offered by the ADA and RA, an employee must disclose the disability to the employer. The decision to disclose a disability to an employer or not can be a difficult one. On the one hand, an employer is not required to make accommodations unless the employee has disclosed the disability. On the other hand, discrimination often begins when the employee makes the disclosure. These factors must be weighed before making the decision to disclose.

Reasons for not disclosing:

If you do not need accommodations
If you are performing well on the job
If you feel that disclosing your disability will cause your supervisor and co-workers to discriminate against you
Reasons for disclosing:

If you fear losing your job because you haven't received the accommodations you need to succeed
If you are about to be fired because of performance issues
It is possible to request accommodations without disclosing information about the disability.
First, if possible, try to provide the accommodations yourself -- by coming in early or staying late to avoid distractions, for instance, or by programming the computer to remind you of appointments. Second, frame requests to the supervisor from a position of strength, rather than bringing up the disability. For example, instead of saying:

"I have a disability called AD/HD, which makes it hard for me to remember things and follow through,"

it might be better to reframe from a standpoint of strength, by saying,

"I work best when I use a tape recorder to help me remember everything new, until I get proficient."

Similarly, instead of:

"I know that the Americans with Disabilities Act protects those of us with disabilities from discrimination, so I know that you will need to provide me with special accommodations, "

it might be better to reframe from a standpoint of strength, by saying,

"I believe my strengths are consistent with the essential tasks of this job. If I can take the time to review my notes in a quiet place before each meeting, I can assure you that I can excel at this position."

Read the information and resource sheet entitled, "Legal Issues for Adults with AD/HD in the Workplace and Higher Education," for more information on ADA and RA.

Making a Career Change

Sometimes, no matter how hard they try, adults with AD/HD find that their initial career choice does not play to their strengths, and it is necessary to make a change. The following categories reflect aspects of an individual that impact effective functioning on the job. Collect data about each of these categories as it applies to you. This data will permit you to see yourself as a unique, complete person, and to better evaluate the careers that match your characteristics.

1. Interests (professional & leisure). Since individuals with AD/HD work better in fields that interest them, it is important that they identify their interests. After the interests have been identified, a consultation with a trained career counselor, who can provide a list of occupations or jobs that correspond to their interests, should be considered. The list of occupations that correspond to the individual's interests will provide the basis for the steps that follow.

2. Skills (mental, interpersonal and physical). Identifying skills and accomplishments can reveal marketable skills that can be used in various work settings. Generally, skills fall into three categories: skills working with data, people or things. People do best when their skills correspond to the requirements of the job. Skills can be assessed through standardized tests or through checklists that trigger knowledge of success in past accomplishments.

3. Personality. What type of personality are you? Personality preferences can be measured by standardized testing or by checklists that force you to choose between two situations. Knowing personality strengths can help improve work habits, increase career options, and achieve a more successful path to a career future.

4. Values (work and leisure). People value different things. It is generally agreed that people work harder and with more focus when the task at hand is in line with their values. Leisure values are also important, because a personal passion can often turn into a career. Career counselors and other professionals who work with career issues, or checklists in career books, can help isolate these values.

5. Aptitudes (verbal, numerical, abstract reasoning, clerical speed and accuracy, mechanical, spatial, spelling, and language). An aptitude is defined as the ability to acquire proficiency in a specific area. It often seems that these are innate, but this is not necessarily true. Aptitudes can also be learned. While a skill is a current ability, an aptitude is the potential to acquire a skill based upon natural talents or training.

Aptitudes can be formally assessed by a professional or by using informal checklists. When you understand what your strengths are, you can compare them to the requirements of any given job. The Dictionary of Occupational Titles and The Occupational Outlook Handbook are two sources for such information. Doing these comprehensive assessments ensures that you have a clear knowledge of the essential tasks of a job for which you are applying, and how your strengths match up with the requirements of the job.

6. Energy patterns (Is there a pattern that's reliable?). All jobs require differing amounts of energy. Are you a "sprinter" or a "plodder alonger?" While those are not real terms, they define the types of people who can either go through each day with the same amount of energy output, or sprint through a job, depleting their energies, and thus feeling "spent." Some people have a pattern to their energy output, while others do not.

7. Workplace habits (what is expected vs. how we measure up). Job success often depends on personal characteristics, such as dependability, reliability, commitment, and attitude. Consult a career-related book on the reference list for a list of the qualities that employers most often look for in employees. Decide how you measure up to these qualities, and determine whether it is necessary to improve these workplace habits.

8. A complete history of all previous jobs (useful for extracting valuable information) . People learn the most from their mistakes and successes. Look back and explore such things as:

So always keep your fork.....

(source courtesy to inetstorybin)

Here was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.
She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she
wanted to be buried in.

The woman also requested to be buried with her favorite Bible. Everything was in order and the pastor was preparing to leave when the woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. "There's one more thing," she excitedly. "What's that?" came the pastor's reply. "This is very important," the woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The pastor stood looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say. "That surprises you, doesn't it?" the woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the pastor.

The woman explained. "In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners I always remember that when the dishes were cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.' It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful and of substance! So I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder, 'What's with the fork?' Then I want you to tell them: 'Keep your fork... the best is yet to come.'

The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the woman goodbye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the woman had a better grasp of heaven that he did. She knew that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the woman's casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and her favorite Bible and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question, "What's with the fork?"

And over and over he smiled. During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and what it symbolized to her. The pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right.
____________ _________ _____

So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you oh so gently, that the best is yet to come........

CHILI TASTER

(Notes From An Inexperienced Chili Taster Named FRANK, who was visiting Texas from the East Coast:)

"Recently I was honored to be selected as an outstanding Famous celebrity in Texas, to be a judge at a chili cook-off, because no one else wanted to do it. Also, the original person called in sick at the last moment, and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table asking directions to the beer wagon when the call came.

I was assured by the other two judges (Native Texans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy and besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted. Here are the scorecards from the event:

Chili # 1: Mike's Maniac Mobster Monster Chili
JUDGE ONE: A little too heavy on tomato. Amusing kick.
JUDGE TWO: Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.
FRANK: Holy shit, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway with it. Took two beers to put the flames out. Hope that's the worst one. These Texans are crazy.

Chili # 2: Arthur's Afterburner Chili

JUDGE ONE: Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight Jalapeno tang.
JUDGE TWO: Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
FRANK: Keep this out of reach of children! I'm not sure what I am supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to walkie-talkie in 3 extra beers when they saw the look on my face.

Chili # 3: Fred's Famous Burn Down the Barn Chili

JUDGE ONE: Excellent firehouse chili! Great kick. Needs more beans.
JUDGE TWO: A beanless chili, a bit salty, good use of red peppers.
FRANK: Call the EPA, I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Barmaid pounded me on the back; now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting shit-faced.

Chili # 4: Bubba's Black Magic ...

JUDGE ONE: Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
JUDGE TWO: Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
FRANK: I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Sally, the barmaid, was
standing behind me with fresh refills; that 300lb. bitch is starting to look HOT, just like this nuclear-waste I'm eating.

Chili # 5: Linda's Legal Lip Remover

JUDGE ONE: Meaty, strong chili. Cayenne peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
JUDGE TWO: Chili using shredded beef; could use more tomato. Must admit the cayenne peppers make a strong
statement.
FRANK: My ears are ringing, and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from a pitcher. It really pisses me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw those rednecks!

Chili # 6: Vera's Very Vegetarian Variety

JUDGE ONE: Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spice and peppers.
JUDGE TWO: The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, and garlic. Superb.
FRANK: My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that slut, Sally. I need to wipe my ass with a snow cone!

Chili # 7: Susan's Screaming Sensation Chili

JUDGE ONE: A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
JUDGE TWO: Ho Hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. I should note that I am worried about Judge Number 3. He appears to be in a bit of distress, as he is cursing uncontrollably.
FRANK: You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the fucking pin, and I wouldn't feel a damn thing. I've lost the sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava-like shit to match my goddamn shirt.
At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing, it's too painful. Fuck it, I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the four-inch hole in my stomach!

Chili # 8: Helen's Mount Saint Chili

JUDGE ONE: A perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili, safe for all, not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
JUDGE TWO: This final entry is a good, balanced chili, neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge Number 3 passed out, fell and pulled the chili pot on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor Yank.

FRANK: ----------(editor' s note: Judge #3 was unable to report)

Drinking Water to Maintain Good Health

Water - The Beverage Your Body Needs Most -

Drinkingwater is so important for good health. When you were a kid in school, you learned that each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogenatoms and one oxygen atom. You may also have learned that it was greatfun to fill up your squirt guns with water, at least until theprincipal caught you. What you may not have learned, however, was howmuch water you needed in order to be a healthy human being.

Why You Need to Drink Water -

Yourbody is estimated to be about 60 to 70 percent water. Blood is mostlywater, and your muscles, lungs, and brain all contain a lot of water.Your body needs water to regulate body temperature and to provide themeans for nutrients to travel to all your organs. Water also transportsoxygen to your cells, removes waste, and protects your joints andorgans.

Signs of Dehydration -

You losewater through urination, respiration, and by sweating. If you are veryactive, you lose more water than if you are sedentary. Diuretics suchas caffeine pills and alcohol result in the need to drink more waterbecause they trick your body into thinking you have more water than weneed.
Symptoms of mild dehydration include chronic pains injoints and muscles, lower back pain, headaches and constipation. Astrong odor to your urine, along with a yellow or amber color indicatesthat you may not be getting enough water. Note that riboflavin, a BVitamin, will make your urine bright yellow. Thirst is an obvious signof dehydration and in fact, you need water long before you feel thirsty.

How Much Water do You Need to Drink?

Agood estimate is to take your body weight in pounds and divide thatnumber in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per daythat you need to drink. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, youshould drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise youshould drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutesyou are active. If you drink alcohol, you should drink at least anequal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it isgood to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board theplane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another twoservings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add upto quite a lot.

Twenty percent of your water need will come fromthe foods you eat. The rest of your water need should come from thebeverages you drink. Water is the best choice. Sodas have a lot ofsugar in them, so if you drink sodas, you may take in more caloriesthan you need. Herbal teas that aren't diuretic are fine. Sports drinkscontain electrolytes and may be beneficial, just look out for addedsugar and calories that you don't need. Juices are good because theyhave vitamins and nutrients.

Caffeinated beverages will also addto your daily water need. Even though caffeine is a diuretic, if youregularly consume caffeine, your body will regulate itself to thatdiuretic effect.

Drink Enough Water -

Itmay be difficult to drink enough water on a busy day. Be sure you havewater handy at all times by keeping a bottle for water with you whenyou are working, traveling, or exercising. If you get bored with plainwater, add a bit of lemon or lime for a touch of flavor. There are somebrands of flavored water available, but watch for extra calories.

How to do this Water Therapy?
Earlymorning, after you get up from bed, (without even brushing your teeth)drink 1.50 litres of water i.e. 5 to 6 glasses. Let us all know thatancient Indians termed this therapy as "USHA PAANA CHIKITSA ". Youmay wash your face thereafter.
Hereit is very essential to note that nothing else, neither drinks norsolid food of any sort should be taken within 1 hr. before and afterdrinking these 1.5 litres of water.
It is also to be strictly observed that no alcoholic drinks shall be taken the previous night.
Ifrequired, boiled and filtered water may be used for this purpose. Is itpossible to drink 1.50 litres of water at one time? This is a BIGQUESTION? To begin with, one may find it difficult to drink 1.50 litresof water at one time, but one will get used to it gradually. Initially, while practicing you may drink four glasses first and then the balancetwo glasses after a gap of 2 minutes. Initially you may find thenecessity to urinate 2 - 3 times within an hour, but it will becomenormal after quite some time.
Byresearch and experience, the following diseases are observed to becured with this therapy within the indicated days as below:

How Does Pure Water Act?

Consumingordinary drinking water by the right method purifies human body. Itrenders the colon more effective by forming new fresh blood, known inmedical terms as Haematopaises. That the mucosal folds of the colon andintestines are activated by this method, is an undisputed fact, just asthe theory that new fresh blood is produced by the mucosal fold. If thecolon is cleansed then the nutrients of the food taken several times aday will be absorbed and by the action of the mucosal folds they areturned in to fresh blood. The blood is all-important in curing ailmentsand restoring health and for this water should be consumed in a regularpattern.

Life is Short & Invaluable, Just go for it . . .

WINTERIZING

Check regularly to be sure winterizing is effective.

Check the anti‑freeze in radiators and windshield washers. Check battery charge and fluid level. Check the exhaust system. Check wipers, and lights, and defrosters, and brakes, tire pressure and tire treads. Check everything that might affect the safety of your trip during the winter months.

Check the tool box in your vehicle to see that it contains the winter emergency equipment; two or three clean rags, and scraper.

Driving attitudes might need changing to prepare for winter.
Readjust and adopt new driving patterns for winter. The smooth, dry road surfaces of last summer are gone, and a different approach is needed if motor vehicles of any kind are to be guided over pavements made treacherous by ice, snow and rain.

First of all, keep in mind the certainty that traffic is going to be slowed by slippery roads, so get an earlier start, allowing more time than usual for a given trip.

Because of the treacherous footing, be prepared for an out if something happens up ahead, increase following distance. You must have more room for stopping—an extra space cushion. If the lead vehicle slows down, hits a dry patch of pavement and slows too suddenly for you to stop on slick pavement, you're in trouble.

Seeing, and being seen is especially important in winter. Dull, cloudy days, will cut down visibility, so drive with low‑beam headlights on. Other drivers are likely to see your lights more readily than the outline of your vehicle against the gloom.

Skidding on curves can be avoided by slowing down beforehand, then accelerating lightly after you start to make the curve.
If you must go through, regardless of snow and icy roads, reinforced tire chains are the best insurance to provide traction, aid in stopping and to avoid skidding.
Try to "winterize" your thinking when you must drive on slippery roads.

MUSCLE CRAMPS

Cramps do seem to have a special affinity for the calves, but other parts of your body are just as vulnerable. Your neck, back, thighs, and feet can also fall victim to these abnormal, agonizing muscle contractions. A whole host of factors have been linked to the onset of cramps. One common culprit is muscle fatigue. Cramps may also crop up when a muscle is overstretched or strained or takes a direct blow. Other potential triggers include mineral depletion, impaired circulation, and sudden changes in temperature. Although for the most part, it is not a serious health problem. But that does not mean that you should leave it alone, even if the pain would allow you to. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to relieve your pain effectively.

1. Increase Vitamin C Intake

Increasing yoru intake of vitamin -C can help keep your muscles from cramping. It is recommended to consume timed-release vitamin C capsules twice a day, 1,000 milligrams in the morning, and 1,000 milligrams at night. Bear in mind that some people may experience diarrhea when taking more than 1,200 milligrams of vitamin C a day.

2. Toe The Line On Pain

If your calf muscles are susceptible to recurring cramps, they are probably weak. You can build them up with simple strengthening exercises. It is recommended to perform toe raises. Simply rise up on your toes, hold for 5 seconds, then return your heels to the floor. Repeat 15 to 20 times, two to three times a day. To enhance the benefits of exercise, you may want to try holding dumbbells at your shoulders.

3. Try Sports Drinks

If you are low in sodium or potassium, you might be prone to cramping. The reason is that both minerals are electrolytes, which regulate muscle contractions. Sports drinks such as Gatorade can help replenish your supply of sodium and potassium. It is recommended diluting drink with a little water, so that your body absorbs it better.

4. Turn Up The Heat

For recurring cramps, it is recommended regular applications of moist heat to the affected muscle. Warm the muscle for 10 to 15 minutes, five or six times a day. Continue the applications every day until there is no trace of cramping.

5. Rub The Right Way

Massage the calf, arch, and toes with baby oil for 5 minutes, using a back-and-forth motion, across the length of the muscle. Rolling over the affected muscle from side to side with the palms of your hands can also help.

6. Fill Up With Fluids

Keeping yourself adequately hydrated can help prevent cramps. Be sure to top off your tank before and during any physical activity, especially if you are working up a sweat in hot weather. You should drink 8 to 12 ounces of fluid before you start exercising. Follow up with 4 to 8 ounces of fluid every 30 to 45 minutes while you are working out.

7. Counter The Contraction

You can gently relax a cramped muscle by guiding it through its normal range of motion. For a cramp in your calf, it is recommended to hold your calf with one hand while pulling your foot toward you with the other hand. The same instructions apply for a cramp in your foot, just place your hand in the arch of your foot instead of on your calf. In both cases hold the stretch until you feel the cramp release.

Bran Muffins.

The couple were 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years.

Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies.

Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods ( LOTS of bran muffins for their fiber) and exercise for the last decade.

One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven.

They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet.

They gasped in astonishment when he said, 'Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.'

The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. 'Why, nothing,' Peter replied, 'remember, this is your reward in Heaven.'

The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth.

'What are the greens fees?', grumbled the old man.

'This is heaven,' St. Peter replied. 'You can play for free, every day.'

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, free flowing beverages.

'Don't even ask,' said St. Peter to the man 'This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.'

The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife.

'Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods, and the decaffeinated tea?' he asked.

'That's the best part,' St. Peter replied. 'You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like, and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!'

The old man pushed, 'No gym to work out at?'

'Not unless you want to,' was the answer.

'No testing my sugar or blood pressure or...'

'Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself.'

The old man glared at his wife and said, 'You and your bran muffins. We could have been here ten years ago!

10 Ways to Lose Weigh Now!!

The perfect weight-loss article would include only four words: Eat less. Exercise more.

Of course, if it were really that simple, I'd be out of work and the R.D. after my name would stand for Really Desperate (for a job).

Unfortunately for you (and, I guess, fortunately for me), it's a lot more complicated than that. Some guys need to eat more to lose weight. And some who are already exercising need to do less, but at a higher intensity.

My goal here is to show you 10 ways that you can manipulate your diet — adding in some places, subtracting in others — to start losing weight the next time you open your mouth with the intention of putting something in.

1. Start your engine
I'm a mother, but I'm not your mother. So I can't order you to eat breakfast. But if you don't, you're putting your number-one fat-burning tool in time-out. It takes calories to digest calories, so eating in the morning fires up your metabolism.

Perfect breakfasts: Try a cup of whole-grain cereal with 1 percent low-fat milk and a banana, or two pieces of whole-wheat toast with two tablespoons of peanut butter and an apple. If you hate breakfast food, or have to eat on the fly, take a turkey sandwich (going easy on the mayo) or a slice of leftover cheese pizza and go.

2. Run with the snack pack
Here's where I disagree with your mother. She discouraged you from eating between meals-probably so you'd eat more of her delicious boiled-liver casserole-but I want you to have a snack handy at all times.

Here's why: If breakfast stokes up your metabolic fires, then snacks keep them going between meals. And planning your snacks in advance keeps you from making a mid-morning Chips Ahoy run.

Perfect snacks: Include one of the following two or three times a day: an ounce of nuts, pretzels, or string cheese; a medium piece of fruit; six graham cracker squares; or six cups of low-fat microwave popcorn.

3. Practice fiber-opting
I'm not out to turn you into a vegetarian or anything, but fiber-rich foods are about the only free pass you'll get in the nutrition world. They have few calories and make you feel full. Your goal is to eat 25 grams of fiber every day (Americans typically consume just 12 grams daily).

Where the fiber is: Eat at least three servings of vegetables and two fruit portions daily; and add beans to salads and soups. Choose whole-grain breads over those made with refined flour. And for breakfast, pick the highest-fiber cereal that doesn't taste like cardboard.

4. Fight fat with fat
Things change fast in my world. A few months ago, you couldn't tell overweight people to eat more fat without the evil specter of Dr. Atkins appearing over your head. Now, it seems, everyone knows about the health benefits of unsaturated fats, those found in fish, nuts, avocados and olive oil.

But in case you haven't heard, here's the basic problem with low-fat diets: You replace the fat with carbohydrates. Carbs provoke a rise in insulin. More insulin leads to more hunger. On top of that, your body digests carbs faster than fat. So you get hungrier faster. Fat has neither of those liabilities. Your body digests it slowly, and it doesn't cause an insulin surge. So adding a bit of fat to breakfast, lunch, and dinner actually speeds weight loss. Another point: Fat makes you feel more satisfied after a meal. You feel as if you've eaten, not just nibbled.

The flip side of this (you knew there was a catch) is that too much fat will make you fat. Fat packs more calories per square inch than protein or carbohydrates. Overeating is easy-especially if you're breaking rules 1 and 2, starving yourself through the day and then shoveling down a bag of fried pork rinds at night.

So add some nuts and olive oil to your next salad. Put some avocado on that turkey-breast sandwich. Smear peanut butter on your morning toast. And when you eat out, never pass up a chance for a nicely prepared piece of salmon, herring, tuna, or mackerel (these are the fattiest fish).

5. Don't get juiced
Sure, 100 percent juice beats the pants off soda for nutrition, but juice (and those pseudo-juice beverages, like Snapple) pack just as many calories-up to 225 in a 16-ounce bottle.

What to drink: Water works. It's not as magical as some make it out to be, but you can't beat it for calories (zero). Diet soft drinks are the next-best alternative.

6. Beer down
Want to look better naked? Try drinking half as much beer, wine, or whatever booze you choose. Alcohol puts on pounds in more ways than we can list here, but try these highlights:

Alcohol contains calories. You may drink like a fish, but booze isn't water. Even a light beer has more than 100 calories. Kahlua and cream? Now we're talking calories.
Booze makes you store fat. Your body sees alcohol as a poison, and tries desperately to get rid of it. Your liver stops processing all other calories until it has dealt with the alcohol. So anything else you eat during the time you're drinking is more likely to end up as fat.
Alcohol lowers testosterone. With more abdominal fat, testosterone drops.
A bender interrupts sleep. And sleep is when your body produces its biggest surge of growth hormone, a chemical that signals your body to use fat for energy. The less growth hormone you release, the fatter you become.

Inconspicuous consumption: When you want to drink less without anyone noticing, start with a glass of water as your first "cocktail" (add a lime for camouflage). Then alternate water with alcoholic beverages. You'll keep your hands busy, and think of all the calories you'll burn during those bathroom runs.

7. Have a green day
Sipping green tea — the kind served at Japanese restaurants — revs up your metabolism. Green tea may be foreign to you, but don't knock it until you've tried it. You can find it any supermarket, and it tastes fine. (Go ahead and add a teaspoon of sugar if it's not sweet enough.)

8. Greet meat
It's lunchtime in the local food court. Which do you go for: salad or burger? Of course, you think, the salad is better for you. After all, it's green. And leafy. And has all kinds of crunchy things, which look a lot healthier than a brown slab of dead animal. But the burger is probably the better choice. Sure, the salad will have fewer calories if you limit what you put on it. Once you add turkey, ham, cheese and dressing, however, you could be looking at more than 700 calories for a three-cup serving. The burger? About 430 calories for a typical quarter-pounder. Plus, the burger will almost certainly make you feel more full, while the meat is rich in zinc, an important mineral for raising testosterone levels.

9. Go for the freezer burn
If weight loss were a game of poker, portion control would be your ace in the hole. You can eat anything and lose or maintain weight, as long as you don't eat too much of anything.

So here's another test: Dinner tonight — frozen meal or pizza? The frozen dinner wins because it gives you portion control. You buy one serving, eat one serving, and you're done. With the pizza, you buy multiple servings, and hope you only eat one of them-probably two slices. If you can pull that off, fine, eat whichever looks better to you. But if you think there's any chance you'll eat more than those two slices, you're better off not tempting yourself.

If the dinner you choose is just an entree and doesn't have vegetables, buy a bag while you're in the frozen-food aisle, and cook a cup of it. Don't worry about the vegetables not being fresh. In winter, the frozen vegetables are often in better shape than the "fresh" ones that were picked last week in Argentina
10. And, uh, did we mention exercise?
While it's possible to lose weight by eating less without doing more, it's unlikely. The people who lose the most and keep it off the longest tend to approach both sides of the equation with equal fervor.

What is lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning occurs when you absorb too much lead by breathing or swallowing a substance with lead in it, such as food, dust, paint, or water. Too much lead in the body can cause irreversible problems in growth and development in children, including:
Learning disabilities.
Behavior disorders.
Slowed growth.
Impaired hearing.
In adults, lead poisoning can cause serious health problems, including high blood pressure and damage to the brain, nervous system, stomach, and kidneys.
Although it is not normal to have lead in your body, a small amount is present in most people. Lead can damage almost every organ system, with the most harm caused to the brain, nervous system, kidneys, and blood.
What causes lead poisoning?
Lead poisoning is usually caused by months or years of exposure to small amounts of lead in the home, work, or day care environment. It can also happen very quickly with exposure to high concentrations. The most common source of lead exposure for children is lead-based paint and dust and soil that are contaminated by it, especially in older homes and buildings. 1 Some estimates say that as many as three-quarters of dwellings built before 1980 have indoor surfaces painted with lead-containing paint. 2
Adults are most often exposed to lead in the workplace or while doing hobbies. Those who work with lead—such as metal smelters, welders, or pottery makers—are at a higher risk of lead poisoning. 3
Other sources of lead exposure include:
Contaminated air (including industrial emissions), water, and soil.
Certain hobbies, such as working with stained glass, building lead-based models, reloading ammunition, or shooting at indoor ranges.
Some alternative medicines and supplements, such as certain vitamins from India. 4
Eating food or juice stored in cans made with lead or glazed with lead-based glazes, which are not manufactured in the United States.
Most people are exposed to some amount of lead in their lifetime. While environmental regulations have reduced lead exposure in the United States, it is still a significant health risk, especially for young children. It is estimated that lead poisoning affects over 400,000 children in the U.S. alone. 5
What are the symptoms of lead poisoning?
There may be no noticeable symptoms of lead poisoning because the effects are subtle or may mimic other conditions. When lead poisoning levels are severe, some general symptoms can include digestive problems, fatigue, headaches, and higher rates of tooth decay.
Children with chronic lead poisoning may show slightly lower intelligence and may be smaller in size than children their age who do not have lead poisoning. Behavioral problems can include irritability or aggressiveness, hyperactivity, learning difficulties, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
In adults, behavioral symptoms can include irritability, mood and personality changes, changes in sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, and decreased sex drive.
At high levels, lead can affect the central nervous system, leading to poor coordination, weakness in hands and feet, headaches, and in severe cases, convulsions, paralysis, and coma.
How is lead poisoning diagnosed?
A lead blood test measures the amount of lead in the blood. Although this test does not measure the complete level of lead in the body, it is the best test available at this time.
A urine sample collected over 24 hours and tested for lead can give an indication of the total lead in the body (body lead burden) and is often used before treatment to remove lead (chelation therapy) is started.
Diagnosing lead poisoning is difficult because the symptoms can be caused by many diseases. Most children with lead poisoning show no signs of their elevated blood lead levels. A blood lead test is necessary to identify these children. 6
How is lead poisoning treated?
Treatment for lead poisoning includes removing the source of lead exposure and eating a balanced diet. Adequate nutrition, especially sufficient iron intake, helps prevent absorption of lead. Often this treatment approach is enough to reduce lead levels in the body. If this is not successful or if lead levels are very high, chelation therapy may be used. Chelation therapy involves taking medications that bind to lead in the body and help speed its elimination through the kidneys.
It is important to make sure that children are not exposed to lead. The most effective means of prevention is to keep children out of buildings that contain lead-based paint until the lead has been either removed or sealed away and the environment is certified by professionals to be free of lead residues.
Who is at highest risk of lead poisoning?
Lead poisoning can occur at any age, but children are most vulnerable to contamination. Children who are at highest risk for lead poisoning include those who:
Live in homes or buildings built before 1978, especially if built before 1950 when lead-based paint was commonly used.
Reside in the inner cities rather than the suburbs in the United States. 7
Are from poor or low-income families.
Have been adopted or recently immigrated from countries where lead poisoning is common, such as China. 8
Are between the ages of 1 to 5 years. Babies and young children are most vulnerable to lead poisoning because they:
Often put their hands and objects in their mouths.
Sometimes swallow nonfood items.
Have higher gastrointestinal absorption of lead.
Have brains that are rapidly developing.
Additionally, lead exposure or lead poisoning may occur in:
People whose drinking water flows through lead-soldered pipes.
Adults who work with lead either in their occupation or as a hobby, such as metal smelters, pottery makers, or stained glass artists.
People who eat food from cans made with lead solder, which are manufactured outside the United States.
People who use ceramic containers for cooking or storing food or beverages. Some ceramic glaze contains lead that may have been improperly fired or cured.
People who eat or breathe traditional or folk remedies that contain lead, such as some herbs and vitamins from India. 4
People who live in communities contaminated by industrial emissions.

Gastroenteritis: First aid

Gastroenteritis: First aid

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of your stomach and intestines. Common causes are:
Viruses.
Food or water contaminated by bacteria or parasites.
Reaction to a new food. Young children may develop signs and symptoms for this reason. Infants who are breast-fed may even react to a change in their mothers' diets.
Side effect from medications.
Characteristic signs and symptoms include:
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal cramps
Bloating
A low-grade fever may accompany these signs and symptoms. Depending on the cause of the inflammation, symptoms may last from one day to longer than a week.
If you suspect gastroenteritis in yourself:
Drink plenty of liquids, such as Gatorade or water, to prevent dehydration.
Ease back into eating. Gradually begin to eat bland, easy-to-digest foods, such as soda crackers, toast, gelatin, bananas, rice and chicken. Stop eating if your nausea returns. Avoid milk and dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods for a few days.
Consider acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) for relief of discomfort, unless you have liver disease.
Get medical help if:
Vomiting persists for more than two days.
Diarrhea persists for longer than several days.
Diarrhea turns bloody.
Fever is 101 F or higher.
Lightheadedness or fainting occurs with standing.
Confusion develops.
Worrisome abdominal pain develops.
If you suspect gastroenteritis in your child:
Allow him or her to rest.
When your child's vomiting stops, begin to offer small amounts of an oral rehydration solution such, as Pedialtyte. Don't use water — in children with gastroenteritis, water isn't absorbed well and won't adequately replace lost fluids.
Gradually introduce bland, easy-to-digest foods, such as toast, rice, bananas and potatoes. Avoid giving your child dairy products and sugary foods, such as ice cream, sodas and candy. These can make diarrhea worse.
Consider acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) for relief of discomfort, unless your child has liver disease. Avoid aspirin.
If you have a sick infant, let your baby's stomach rest for 30 to 60 minutes, then offer small amounts of liquid. If you're breast-feeding, let your baby nurse. If your baby is bottle-fed, offer a small amount of an oral rehydrating formula (Pedialyte, Infalyte) or regular formula.
Get medical help if your child:
Becomes unusually drowsy.
Vomits blood.
Has bloody diarrhea.
Shows signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and skin, marked thirst, sunken eyes, or crying without tears. In an infant, be alert to the soft spot on the top of the head becoming sunken and to diapers that remain dry for more than eight hours.
Is younger than age two and has a fever for longer than one day or is age two or older and has a fever for longer than three days.
If you, like so many of us, are so caught up with work that you have little time to watch what you eat, it's time to take a breather before your lifestyle takes its toll on your health.
Here are five bad habits which you must avoid to salvage your health.

1. Skipping breakfast
A lot of people leave home with just a cup of tea or coffee and then they wonder why they are always crabby, irritable and low on energy throughout the day.

Skipping this first, most important meal of the day is like starting a car without fuel. Your body is forced to call on its energy reserves and these do not last very long, making you irritable and snappy and lacking in concentration by the middle of the day.

What's more, you will end up eating a lot more servings or calorie-dense foods at lunch, which will cause your sugar levels to go up and then come crashing down, making you feel sluggish and tired.

Solution: A good breakfast does not have to be elaborate; a glass of skimmed milk with 2 handfuls of corn or wheat flakes and a fruit will suffice. For hot breakfast lovers, an egg, two slices of bread and a fruit or a bowl of oatmeal porridge accompanied by a fruit are enough.

2. Drinking too much tea/coffee
Sipping constantly can be a tough habit to break. But too much of either tea or coffee can do two things:
It may leave you feeling jittery, irritable, dehydrated, and even interrupt your sleep pattern at night so you do not get deep sleep or do not feel rested the next day.
If taken with your meals, tea and coffee inhibit the absorption of iron from your food. Your body throws out the nutrient as waste.
Solution: If you cannot cut down on the number of cups, cut down on the size of cups so you drink half the quantity. If you have a choice, opt for water.

3. Not drinking enough water
Most corporate offices are air-conditioned, so we do not really sweat and therefore, do not feel so thirsty. What's more when you are used to drinking water below your requirement, your body adapts and when you do start drinking a little more water, your body treats it as excess -- in fact, initially, the body actually throws it out causing you to run to the toilet every few minutes.

In the long run, not drinking enough water can cause constipation, indigestion, gas, increased hunger pangs, dehydration and can make your skin look dull too.

Solution: Keep a 1 litre bottle of water at your table and aim to finish it before the end of the day. It may take you two to three days to adapt to an increased dose but when you do, you will notice the positive benefits immediately -- better skin, better bowel movements and better control on your hunger pangs.

4. Eating at odd hours
While you cannot be expected to leave in the middle of a meeting because the clock says lunch time, it is definitely possible to try to have a somewhat regular meal timing for the majority of the days in the week.

Having a somewhat fixed meal time helps keep your metabolic rate up and can help prevent gas and acidity, which result from long gaps between meals.

Timely eating will also prevent you from overeating as once your body is used to getting energy at a particular hour, it will stop demanding food at odd hours.

Solution: Try to have a fixed time-frame in which you can have your meal peacefully and finish it in a matter of 15 to 20 minutes.

5. Weekend binging
Most of us put in endless hours during the week eating whatever is available, and then comes the weekend. We go on another binge that we feel we deserve. Hard drinks along with food add to the damage we cause to our health in the long run.

Solution: Try to take some time to relax at the end of each day and don't wait for the weekend to unwind. Take a relaxing massage, watch a movie or a play or read a good book. Eating is not the only way to pamper yourself!

Eat apple to protect your baby!

Mothers who eat apples during pregnancy may protect their children from developing asthma later in life.

Researchers from the Netherlands and Scotland tracked dietary intake by nearly 2,000 pregnant women and examined the effects of the maternal diet on airway development in more than 1,200 of their children five years later.

Among a variety of foods consumed and recorded by the pregnant women, the researchers found that the children of mothers who ate apples had significantly reduced risk of developing asthma and childhood wheezing, reported science portal EurekAlert.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing.

There is no cure for asthma, though symptoms sometimes decrease over time. With proper self-management and medical treatment, most people with asthma can live normal lives.

Junk food may increase cancer risk in women

Eating junk food may increase chances of cancer in women, says a new study that, however, found no cancer link in men.

Scientists, led by Par Stattin, from Umea University Hospital in Sweden, studied around 65,000 adults for 13 years and identified 2,478 cases of cancer.

The study highlighted the dangers of a diet that includes high levels of fat and processed foods, reported the online edition of Daily Mail.

It found that women with raised levels of blood sugar face significant extra risks of suffering from cancers of the pancreas, skin, womb and urinary tract.

Further, older women with fat-rich diets have a 15 percent increase in their chances of developing breast cancer. The study found that fat intake levels of 40 percent of diet put women most at risk.

High blood sugar levels are linked to unhealthy diets, including fatty and processed foods, and can lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Previous research has shown an increased risk of cancer in patients with this form of diabetes, which usually occurs in middle age.

But the new findings demonstrate that rising blood sugar levels also increase the cancer risk in women.

It shows that the 25 percent of women with the highest blood sugar readings had a 26 percent greater chance of developing cancer than those with readings in the bottom quarter bracket.

There was also an increase in breast cancer risk for women with high blood sugar before menopause.

Purple grape juice could protect your heart

A glass of purple grape juice a day could leave you feeling in the pink. It is the most effective of all fruit juices at preventing heart disease and cancer, says a latest study.

It has long been known that fruits contain antioxidants called polyphenols which help to neutralise unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals. If left unchecked, these molecules can harm cells, playing a role in everything from ageing to cancer.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Britain wanted to see how much polyphenols remained once fruit had been turned into juice, reported the online edition of Daily Mail.

Professor Alan Crozier and other researchers tested 13 types of juice from a supermarket, including those made from pomegranates, grapefruit, apples, pineapples and tomatoes.

They were a mixture of 'not from concentrate' and 'concentrated' varieties.

A drink made from purple Concord grapes had the greatest level of antioxidants, with cloudy apple, tropical and cranberry juices coming in next, the researchers found.

Generally, the darker juices were best, with purple grapes having the highest levels of polyphenols, the researchers said in their study published in the "Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry".

Sleeping pills can be harmful to health

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has ordered new warnings of the potential health hazards in taking sleeping pills.

The FDA is warning that the popular sleep aids can cause severe allergic reactions and unusual activity while 'asleep' - everything from cooking meals to making phone calls.

In the US more than 45 (m) million prescriptions for such pills were written in 2005.

But some people taking sleeping pills reportedly engage in 'sleep driving.'

That's what Carrie Paps claims she engaged in after taking an Ambien pill, shortly before going to bed one night. When Paps woke up, she claims she was sitting at her desk.

Similar stories have been documented in police reports and lawsuits over the past year.

Doctor Michael Cramer-Bornemann of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Centre said "these are significant behaviours that are not without risk not just to the individual but to the general public, as soon as this gets out of the house and someone is sleep driving, the public is now in danger."

Now the FDA will require the makers of Lunesta, Ambien and eleven other sleep medications to clearly list these possible side-effects on their labels.

The bizarre side effect of "sleep driving" first made headlines when US Representative Patrick Kennedy crashed his car after taking such a medication.

Dear friends,

Dear friends,
Here is a little meditation. In this holy season of Lent it will surely help
us to think of God and thank Him for his special wasy of dealing with us
especially when things do not go the way we plan.
With love and prayers,
Justus

>* When you're down to nothing, God is up to something." *

*This is beautiful! Try not to cry. *

*She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating
room. She said: "How is my little boy ? Is he going to be all right ?
When can I see him ?"
**
**The surgeon said, "I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't
make it."
*

*Sally said, "Why do little children get cancer ? Doesn't God care any more
? Where were you, God, when my son needed you ?"
**
**The surgeon asked, "Would you like some time alone with your son ? One of
the nurses will be out in a few minut es, before he's transported to the
university."
**
**Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good bye to son.
She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. "Would you
like a lock of his hair ?" the nurse asked.
*
*
**Sally nodded yes. T he nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a
plastic bag and handed it to Sally.
*

*The mother said, "It was Jimmy's idea to donate his body to the University
for Study. He said it might help somebody else. "I said no at first, but
Jimmy said, 'Mom, I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some
other little boy spend one more day with his Mom." She went on, "My Jimmy
had a heart of gold. Always thinking of so meone else. Always wanting to
help others if he could."
**
**Sally walk! ed out of Children's Mercy Hospital for the last time, after
spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy's
belongings on the seat beside her in the car.
*

*The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty
house. She carried Jimmy's belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of
his hair to her son's room.
*
*
**She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his
room exactly where he had always kept them. She laid down across his bed
and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep.
*

*It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Laying beside her on the bed was
a folded letter. The letter said *:

*"Dear Mom, I know you're going to miss me; but don't think t hat I will
ever forget you, or stop loving you, just 'cause I'm not around to say "I
Love You" . I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday
we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy
so you won't be so lonely, that's okay with me. He can have my room and old
stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably
wouldn't like the same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and
stuff girls like, you know. Don't be sad thinking about me. This really is
a neat place. Grandma and G randpa met me as soon as I got here and showed
me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels
are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn't
look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him.
Jesus himself took me to see GOD ! And guess what, Mom ? I got to sit on
God's knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That's when I
told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good bye and
everything. But I already knew that wasn't allowed. Well, you know what
Mom ? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this
letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this
letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the
questions you asked Him 'Where was He when I needed him ?' "God said He was
in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was o n the cross. He was
right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, no
one else can see what I've written except you. To everyone else this is
just a blank piece of paper. Isn't that cool ? I have to give God His pen
back now. He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight
I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I'm sure the food will be
great.
*

*Oh, I almo st forgot to tell you. I don't hurt anymore. The cancer is all
gone. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore and God couldn't
stand to see me hurt so much, either. That's when He sent The Angel of
Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery ! How about
that ?
*
*
**Signed with Love from God, Jesus & Me.
